Zack and Miri Make a Porno Gets an NC-17 Rating
Are we surprised? Obviously not.
Writer/director Kevin Smith's latest comedy project Zack and
Miri Make a Porno has been rooster-blocked today with an NC-17 rating by the
Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
The unquestionably explicit film stars Seth Rogan and Elizabeth Banks who play two friends that find a glimmer of hope for monetary success (and much more) by sharing a directorial debut in the porno industry. Obviously this film's rating was doomed since its conception, but Smith has already sent his film to the appeals board for further review.
Rogen, who is no newbie to showcasing controversial material in films, voiced his preemptive concern for Zack and Miri this past June while speaking with MTV, saying, "It's crazy to me that Hostel is fine, with people gouging their eyes out and sh*t like that. But you can't show two people having sex - that's too much."
The MPAA's site has the film slated as "pending appeal," but my guess is that Smith will have to settle with cutting a bunch of material and then releasing an unrated version on DVD for true fans.
The film is currently set to hit theaters some time this coming October.
Thanks to Paste for the tip.

I don't see what the big deal is. This country is so in the Dark Ages with sex. They should rate it X and only show it at peep shows. :)

Just more proof that the movie ratings system is a joke. It's not intended to help anyone other than Hollywood. The PG-13 rating is the perfect example - you can get away with a lot of stuff that used to brand a movie with an "R", but now the kiddies can see it. After all, it may be suggested that anyone under 13 not see the movie, but there's nothing stopping anyone of any age from getting in. Movie ratings will remain meaningless until the ratings system is based on objective criteria, and is not determined by the feelings of a dozen people who sit and watch a movie. (And the fact that theatres won't show NC-17 films is de-facto censorship. While I don't believe any theatre should be forced to show any movie, we all know the difference between true porn and a film that's meant for adults.)

I think it's ridiculous that a theater won't show NC-17 movies. I think it's been proven (just by the sheer existence of "unrated" DVDs) that people would pay to see it.

why not someone open a theater geared for adults? serve booze, show nc-17 (not porn but just adult-focused movies)? or do kiddie friendly during the weekdays and open it up on teh weekends/late nights?

Why not just release the film as NC-17? I can't imagine much of the audience for this film would be below 17 years of age anyway?

No major movie theater will show an NC-17 film so that's why they'll have to edit it to an R rating and then release the real version as the unrated DVD.

I'm willing to bet that a detailed examination of the "objectionable" scenes would show that they are largely depictions of women enjoying sex. For some god-forsaken reason this is considered particularly egregious by the MPAA.

probably because they never get to see women enjoying sex in real life, if you catch my drift. what im trying to say is theyre dickless. **** the mpaa **** the fcc and **** anyone else that believes in censoring ANYTHING. we live in America where i should be free to see or hear anything i choose as long as its not hurting anyone. the first amendment protects the right of the KKK to promote hateful disgusting ideas in public but a woman who goes topless in public will get arrested for public indecency. which one of these things is really indecent? which one of these things is really bad for society? titties make the world a better place.
